Stephen Hawking was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, at age 21 in 1963. ALS is a progressive disease that affects nerve cells in the brain, eventually paralyzing muscles and making it difficult to speak. Despite his diagnosis, Hawking continued to work hard and enjoy life, using his brain’s freedom to pursue his goals. He became one of the world’s most famous scientists and disabled people, communicating through a synthetic voice and using a wheelchair.
