Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) bestowed this title upon him during the Battle of the Trench (Ghazwah al-Khandaq) after he courageously volunteered to scout the enemy multiple times.

The Prophet (PBUH) stated: Every Prophet has a Hawari (disciple), and my Hawari is Az-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam.

Hazrat Zubayr (RA) holds a highly esteemed place in Islamic history as one of the Ashara Mubashara. He was also the cousin of the Prophet (PBUH) and the husband of Hazrat Asma bint Abi Bakr (RA).

In the Battle of Badr (Ghazwa Badr), Hazrat Ali (RA) famously killed Walid bin Utbah during the initial single-combat duels.

The Famous Opening Duels

According to classical Arab warfare traditions, the battle began with single-combat challenges. Three premier warriors from the Quraysh stepped forward, and three Muslim heroes rose to face them:

• Hazrat Ali (RA) fought and swiftly killed Walid bin Utbah.


• Hazrat Hamza (RA) fought and killed Utbah bin Rabi'ah (or Shaybah, depending on varying historical narrations).


• Hazrat Ubaydah bin al-Harith (RA) fought Shaybah bin Rabi'ah. After both wounded each other, Hazrat Ali (RA) and Hazrat Hamza (RA) stepped in to finish off the opponent and carried the wounded Hazrat Ubaydah (RA) back to the Muslim lines.

Overall Casualties

Historical accounts from early Islamic scholars note that around 70 polytheists were killed during the entire battle. Due to his extraordinary swordsmanship, Hazrat Ali (RA) is credited in some reports with killing a significant portion of the enemy fighters, including notable Meccan warriors such as Nawfal bin Khuwaylid and Al-As bin Sa'id.

Main Difference between Hadith and Sunnah

Hadith refers to the recorded reports of the sayings, actions, approvals, and characteristics of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), which were narrated by his companions and compiled in books.

Sunnah refers to the actual way of life, practices, and traditions of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) that Muslims are meant to follow, including his actions, habits, and teachings in practical form.

In simple words, Hadith is the narration (record), while Sunnah is the practice (application) derived from those narrations.

According to the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, Muslims were allowed to visit Makkah after:

The agreement of Sulah Hudaybiyyah stated that Muslims would return the same year but could perform Umrah the following year.

Therefore, Muslims visited Makkah in the next year (7 AH), known as Umrah al-Qada.
