The British sold Kashmir to Gulab Singh, the Raja of Jammu, for 7.5 million rupees (75 lakhs) under the Treaty of Amritsar on March 16, 1846. The treaty was signed in Amritsar to settle a territorial dispute following the First Sikh War between the United Kingdom and the Sikhs.
