When did the New York Stock Exchange open its first permanent headquarters near Wall Street in New York City.
The correct answer is 4 January 1865. On this date, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) officially opened for business in its first permanent headquarters at 10‑12 Broad Street, near the corner of Wall Street in New York City[reference:0][reference:1].
Why This Date Is Significant
The NYSE had formally existed since 1792, when 24 merchants signed the Buttonwood Agreement under a buttonwood tree on Wall Street[reference:2][reference:3]. For decades, the Exchange operated from a series of temporary locations—first at the Tontine Coffee House and later in various rented rooms on Wall Street[reference:4][reference:5]. By the mid‑19th century, however, the explosive growth of American enterprise, the opening of the Erie Canal, and the invention of the telegraph and stock ticker had made New York City the nation's financial capital, creating an urgent need for a permanent, purpose‑built home[reference:6].
The new building on Broad Street was a Corinthian‑style structure that served the Exchange until 1903, when it moved to its current location at 18 Broad Street[reference:7][reference:8]. This move marked a turning point in financial history, establishing Wall Street as the undisputed center of American capitalism[reference:9].
Why the Other Options Are Incorrect
- 3 January 1865: There is no historical record of the NYSE opening its permanent headquarters on this date. The Exchange was still in its temporary quarters at that time.
- 5 January 1877: By this date, the NYSE had already been operating from its Broad Street headquarters for 12 years. The Exchange did not move or open a new headquarters in 1877.
- 6 January 1879: Similarly, this date has no connection to the opening of the NYSE's permanent home. The Exchange remained at its 1865 location until 1903.
Therefore, the New York Stock Exchange opened its first permanent headquarters on 4 January 1865, making it the only correct answer.
