Which is the highest waterfall in the world?
The correct answer is Angel Falls. Angel Falls, located in the Gran Sabana region of Venezuela, is the world's tallest uninterrupted waterfall, with a breathtaking total height of 979 metres (3,212 feet) and a single continuous drop of 807 metres (2,648 feet).
The Magnificent Angel Falls
- Discovery and Name: The waterfall is named after Jimmie Angel, an American aviator who was the first to fly over the falls in 1933 and crash‑landed nearby in 1937. The indigenous Pemon people called it "Kerepakupai Vená," meaning "waterfall of the deepest place."
- Physical Characteristics: The water plunges over the edge of the Auyán-tepui, a flat‑topped table mountain, in Canaima National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The height is so immense that much of the water turns to mist before reaching the bottom.
- Comparison with Other Famous Waterfalls:
- Niagara Falls: On the US‑Canada border, height is only about 51 metres (167 feet), famous for water volume, not height.
- Victoria Falls: On the Zambia‑Zimbabwe border, height is about 108 metres (355 feet), the largest sheet of falling water.
- Iguazu Falls: On the Argentina‑Brazil border, the tallest individual drop is about 82 metres (269 feet).
Thus, the highest waterfall in the world is Angel Falls in Venezuela.
